I’m a makeup and skincare junkie, but that being said, my purpose in trying out new stuff these days is to find my absolute favorite tried-and-trues and share them with you. Since becoming a mommy, I especially need every product in my life to work hard and fast if I still want to look put-together most days.
Ain’t no mama got time for products that don’t work.
Lipstick is no exception, especially when I’m always trying to kiss little V’s yummy hands, feet, forehead, tummy, you name it. You can seriously put on a pair of big sunglasses and a quick lip color to fake being perfectly made-up if you’re going to work out, get the mail, or run a quick errand.
My most used lip for the longest time has been this liquid lipstick in Icon, but with spring and summer, I wanted to find a favorite pink option.
So today I’m bringing you another high-end versus drugstore product comparison (see my hair mask post here). The focus will be on two comparable long-lasting lip products I’ve been trying side-by-side for the past few weeks: Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge and L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Last Lip Color.
Have you seen my Shop sections above? I regularly update my Women’s, Men’s, Baby, Maternity, & Home sections with items I either currently use or would love to try and think my Bond Girls would enjoy as well!
Let’s take a look at the high end option.
The Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge (Pomegranate Pink 19) is a “non-stop liquid lip color with the intense, long-lasting hold of a lip stain and the eye-catching shine of a gloss. Formulated with a combination of high molecular weight polymers and volatile oils, Aqua Rouge locks color on the lips for a waterproof, smudge-proof result that will not transfer or fade.” I second that.
“Its intensely pigmented formula provides immediate, opaque color with a matte texture and its non-sticky, clear top coat adds an extreme, lacquered finish.” Here I’d have to say my particular color was definitely pigmented but not super opaque — closer to a lip stain. Also, it wasn’t entirely matte either; there was definitely a bit of a wet stain look when both ends were applied.
1. Apply lip color with precision using the ergonomic, foam applicator.
2. Evenly distribute the clear top with the polyester brush to lock the color onto the lip.
One end of the Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge is a doe-foot applicator and the other end is a brush; steps 1 and 2 are both a wet feel. The Make Up For Ever lip product is made in Italy. There is an old-school lipstick scent to it, and I can smell it long after I apply, unfortunately. The lip stain effect is quite pretty and more natural-looking.
Here I am wearing the Make Up For Ever on a recent shoot.
Now for the drugstore option.
The L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Last (Passionate Petal 111) is also a “long-lasting, transfer-proof color — no fading, no bleeding. The high-intensity color glides on with a moisturizing feel that they say lasts up to 24 hours.” I wouldn’t say it looks its best after 24 hours, but it will definitely stay put for the most part throughout eating, drinking, kissing, etc. “The result: bold lips without the dry-out and no need to re-apply.” I definitely don’t need to reapply (and wouldn’t want to reapply for fear of cakiness) after the initial application and can second that claim.
1. Apply Pro-Last lipcolor to clean lips. For best results, allow to dry for 2 minutes.
2. Apply color seal balm to lock-in color and leave lips feeling moisturized.
The L’Oreal Pro-Last has a doe-foot on one end and a retractable balm stick on the other and is made in the USA. The balm stick side also has a pleasant candy scent to it, but you don’t smell it throughout the day. It reminds me of the Rimmel Apocalips/Show Off but way more long-lasting, obviously.
In conclusion, I have to say that the L’Oreal drugstore lip won me over this time with these particular shades. I am a huge fan of Make Up For Ever products, but as we all know, not every product in a line will always be a winner. For example, I absolutely love the foundation and concealer by Make Up For Ever and use both often, but this particular lip product is a no-go for me.
Unfortunately, I can smell the old-lady-lipstick Make Up For Ever scent all day long. It may also be that the color (Passionate Petal 111 in L’Oreal vs. Pomegranate Pink 19 in Make Up For Ever) was prettier on me (in my opinion), but I really love the more modern matte finish of the L’Oreal.
Of course, you could try both and have the exact opposite opinion, but I hope my personal experience can help you out if you’ve been looking for a mega long-lasting lip product as well. Especially since drugstores don’t offer testers, it’s fun to see what drugstore products look like on real people — I will never understand.
Let me know if you enjoyed this kind of side-by-side comparison and if you’d like more in the future.
