Pointed lace-up flats have been very popular for some time now, made eponymous by Aquazzura, but did you know the origin of the style? I sure didn’t until I googled the word “ghillie.” The shoe style is actually specifically designed for certain types of dance, similar to ballet flats. They’re worn by Scottish country dancers, Irish dancers, and Highland dancers.
I’m usually pretty late to jump on trend bandwagons, because I tend to prefer styles that will stand the test of time. However, I’ve had my eye on a new pair of flats for fall/winter, and the ghillie lace-up style may be the one — or maybe some Chanel espadrilles or rockstud flats (any experience with those would be greatly appreciated in the comments below).
Today I wanted to share some of my favorite ghillie lace-up flat styles, starting at $45, for Aquazzura Christy look-alikes. They come in so many colors and patterns now, some with beautiful grommet detailing and others with textured materials. I tried on the $45 Topshop ones; they’re true to size and at a great price point, but they definitely felt a little flimsy/light — you really do get what you pay for. I’d at least go with a real leather pair (around $100).
Also, I walked into Zara yesterday and tried on a beautiful pointed lace-up flat with grommets (à la Isabel Marant). They were true to size, around $100, and I’m kind of sad that I didn’t get them because I can’t find them online (maybe they’re just not on there yet and will be soon). They also have a less expensive pair here, but I didn’t personally try them on or see them there.
I just cleaned out my closet for the next season and sold a ton of stuff, so I was able to place my order for these babies as a reward after years of having them on my wishlist, but I still would love a pair of flats that I can get a lot of wear out of as a SAHM.
Also, I’ve been trying to figure out chic mom-friendly shoe options in general, and it’s honestly not a topic too many people are covering online (well, at least I wasn’t impressed with the search results). The struggle is real — I wish I could look as good as I feel in heels in a lower-heel option. If you have any suggestions for me, please also let me know!
